Questions ecommerce operations teams ask first

What counts as a governed action?

One checked commerce action while enforcement is on: a price change, stock change, order acceptance, fulfillment step, promotion change, refund or return. Each produces a signed Decision Dossier. Ship and cancel actions an operator confirms on Walmart are logged but not metered; a Walmart refund is a governed action because it is checked against your refund policy. Shadow Mode observations are never billed.

Is Decionis Commerce Gate a payment gateway?

No. Commerce Gate does not process payments, hold funds, move money or handle card data, and it is unrelated to payment providers with a similar name. It checks whether a price change, stock change, order, promotion, refund or return clears your policy and records the answer with a signed Decision Dossier. Payments stay with your marketplace or payment provider.

Is Decionis Checkout Gate a different product?

No. Decionis Checkout Gate is Commerce Gate for Shopify, the name it carries on the Shopify App Store. It runs the same published policy and the same proceed, hold or escalate vocabulary, records to the same Decision Ledger, and enforces its checkout, discount and payment rules inside Shopify Functions.

Does Commerce Gate replace my ERP, repricer, or order management tool?

No. Those tools keep executing. Commerce Gate sits above them and decides whether a given action may proceed, should be held, or needs a person, according to policies you publish.

What happens if Decionis is unreachable?

Each platform has its own answer. Walmart order acknowledgment and Adobe Commerce checkout fail open: if Decionis can't be reached, the order or checkout goes through and the gap is recorded. Shopify checkout fails closed by default, rule by rule, so a margin rule keeps protecting you; you can set individual rules to fail open. Its post-order inventory check only records a decision and never touches the order. Business Central has one company-wide setting, FAIL_OPEN or FAIL_CLOSED, and defaults to FAIL_OPEN. When an AI agent asks the CommerceGate MCP and gets an error instead of an answer, the agent must treat it as HOLD. Walmart refunds are rejected when the order is in the wrong state or the amount exceeds what is left to refund. A refund above the unattended limit in your policy escalates to a named approver, and a second refund on the same line is held for review; if the refund policy check itself cannot be reached, refunds up to the connector's fallback limit proceed and larger ones are held until it recovers.

Which marketplace permissions do you request?

Walmart: seller-scoped OAuth 2.0 with the order scope (read and write) and the pricing scope (read only). Today the connection is used to read orders, hold acknowledgments, and run ship, cancel and refund when an operator confirms them. Commerce Gate does not read or write Walmart inventory and does not write Walmart prices; your repricer or ERP acts on the verdict. Shopify shows its scopes at install; Adobe Commerce uses a read-scoped integration token.

Can I turn enforcement off again?

Yes. Walmart and Adobe Commerce go back to Shadow Mode with one switch and keep every recorded decision. Shopify rules are turned off individually in the app, and Business Central enforcement is switched in the extension.
