Commerce Gate vs ERP margin rules

Commerce Gate adds a central line-margin and agent-spend check to Dynamics 365 Business Central sales-document release and posting. Your ERP approval workflows still route documents and approvals. The Commerce Gate extension is in Beta, with certification pending, and needs a signed package and a sandbox test before rollout; the transaction guard allows or blocks without writing to your ERP.

What an ERP workflow does well

An ERP workflow puts an approval next to the documents, costs and accounting you already use. Microsoft documents Business Central approval templates and Power Automate flows, including connections to other tools, so ERP controls are not limited to manual approvals.

Compare the event and rule you actually have. A built-in approval, a custom margin extension and an outside workflow can run at different points. Check whether yours runs before release or posting, which line costs it sees, and whether every tool that writes goes through it.

Microsoft: workflows in Business Central. Microsoft documents approval templates and Power Automate integration; capabilities depend on the configured workflow.

What the Commerce Gate transaction check adds

Commerce Gate checks line margin and agent spend for the complete transaction, at Business Central sales-document release and posting. It does not cover every ERP transaction, stock change, price edit or refund.

The MCP ERP guard checks the transaction you send and can reserve the agent’s budget once per transaction, but never writes to your ERP; the extension handles release and posting. An allow answer is a policy and budget result, not your consent to post a document.

Include readiness and failure behavior in the decision

The Business Central extension is in Beta, with certification pending. A signed package, a clean sandbox test and a preview release come before production rollout. A check in source does not mean an AppSource listing or a production install is available.

The extension has one company-wide setting for when Commerce Gate is unavailable: release and posting either continue or stop, and they continue unless you change it. Choose and test this before you turn on enforcement. There is no look-back at past Business Central orders.

What Commerce Gate covers today

Business Central: supported release and posting

Sales-order release and posting are allowed or blocked on line margin and the agent's spend budget.

Before you choose, see what happens on each platform during an outage and how we check integration status. Signed Decision Dossiers come where the platform supports them; some outage fallbacks and operator-confirmed actions are recorded without one.

How to choose

Use ERP controls when the configured workflow meets the policy

Your existing approval or margin extension may be enough when it sees the costs, runs at every document event that matters and records the reasons your reviewers need.

Consider Commerce Gate for the supported margin and budget check

Use the readiness guide when you want central line-margin and agent-spend rules at Business Central release or posting. Check the release status, test one document in a sandbox and choose the outage setting first.

Questions and answers

Does Commerce Gate replace ERP approval workflows?

No. Your Business Central approval workflows keep routing documents and approvals. Commerce Gate adds its line-margin and agent-spend check at sales-document release and posting; it does not cover every ERP action.

Does the MCP ERP guard post a transaction?

No. It answers allow or block for the complete transaction you send and can reserve the agent’s budget once per transaction. It never writes to your ERP. Posting needs a separate integration turned on for that action, and your authorization.

Is Business Central enforcement ready for every customer?

No. It is in Beta and certification is pending. Test the signed package in a sandbox before rollout, then choose the company-wide setting for when Commerce Gate is unavailable; by default documents go through.
